Spiral
Dance is currently recruiting for Board Members. Spiral Dance has grown and
developed over the last five years inspiring people to dance across the Borough
of Rochdale and into Greater Manchester. The support of local people is vital
to this growth contributing new ideas, forming new partnerships and supporting
the continued good practice of the company. Spiral Dance would like to hear
from you if you feel you have something to offer the development of the
company. This could include knowledge of community development, business
skills, financial skills or knowledge of the arts.
We
have a number of positions available on the Board, thee positions are voluntary
and require a commitment to five meetings a year, which are usually in the
evening. If you are interested in talking to us more about how you can be
involved please contact Catherine Wilks at the Spiral Dance office or email catherine@spiraldance.co.uk.
FOLKWAYS
Folkways is a programme of work that has developed from all
the projects that Spiral Dance delivers, particularly with Older People, Young
People and within the communities of the Rochdale Borough. The project explores
habits, customs, behaviours, beliefs and values, most importantly it has got
everyone involved sharing, learning and understanding more about people we
meet, live and work with. The project has combined a variety of art forms, and
Spiral Dance has enjoyed collaborating with a number of freelance artists, Just
Poets, M6 Youth Theatre and LEF Arts.
On December the 10th the Spiral Dance team were
joined by 170 people between 3.00-5.00pm for circle dances, live music, poetry
and performance. In the evening another 180 people came for a Lancashire Fayre
Supper and to watch all the creative Folkways performances that had been
created throughout 2009.
The whole event was a joy to be part of, and has received
many positive comments. The project is now in a new phase of development with a
series of school workshops being planned between May-July 2010. For more
information about these workshops and how you can be involved please contact
Catherine Wilks at catherine@spiraldance.co.uk.
The Folkways final report will be available from
mid January 2010.
Spiral Dance is currently working
in partnership with DIGM (Dance Initiative Greater Manchester) to develop a
boys dance project in Rochdale. The project will also involve East Manchester
and Tameside. The project will involve taster workshop, Company Try Out’s, and
the formation of a Boys Youth Dance Company. The group will work with
professional dance artists and have the opportunity to work with Company Chameleon
and create work for Urban Moves, Manchester’s outdoor dance event, in July
2010. Watch this space for more dates and details.
Company
Chameleon are two professional dance artists, Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner,
who are establishing a new professional dance company in the area. Both Anthony
& Kevin started their dance careers, as members of Trafford Youth Dance and
have since gone on to work with a range of professional touring companies from
Scottish Dance Theatre, Fin Walker Dance amongst many others. They have now
returned to Manchester
to establish their new company. Simultaneously to the first phase of STRIDE,
DiGM commissioned a new performance work from the company and co-promoted
performances by Company Chameleon at the Lowry. They now have presented two
sell out performances at the Lowry, a successful season in Edinburgh
and have been invited to perform at British Dance Edition, the biennial
platform for British professional dance performances.
Inside Out July 8th 2009
'this was a fantastic event, that was amazing to be part of'
(Follow this link to watch the seven minute wonder!)
On the 8th of July 2009 Spiral Dance arrived at 10.00am to start a day where we would fill Rochdale Town Centre with dance, laughter and performance. Eleven schools created work and their performances started at 12.45pm. The teachers and the pupils from the schools had worked over ten weeks to choreograph some fantastic original pieces Ashfield Valley Primary School, Caldershaw Primary School, Falinge Park High School, Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College, Lowerplace Primary School, Norden Community Primary School, Oulder Hill Community School, Redwood School, St Edwards Primary School, St Margaret’s Primary School, and Wardle High School. Watched by the Mayor and Mayoress, local Councillors, parents, the general public and staff from local businesses, RMBC and Link4Life, they were impressed by the high standard of choreography in this unique performance opportunity. The highlight of the day was the performance where everyone including the schools and the audience joined together to share in a seven minute wonder. 'it was great, the kids and staff are buzzing'. 250 people shared in an experience which left everyone smiling and laughing. The Spiral Dance over 50's groups from Heywood and Kirkholt also joined in the performance 'we never thought we'd be doing something like this at our age'.
